Visitors to Augsburg are greeted at the front door by the warm welcoming arms of Jesus. Another distinctive feature of Augsburg is its historical connection with the Lutheran community. When Mrs. Charles J. Lang, a member of Martini Lutheran Church, gathered a group of friends in her home, they discussed beginning a church-sponsored home for children. An enthusiastic response from a number of area churches resulted in the opening of a home for six aged persons and three orphans on West Lexington Street. Throughout its history, Augsburg has fostered its strong ties to area churches and is affiliated with 88“member” churches which appoint delegates and elect the Board of Directors. Both ELCA and LCMS congregations support Augsburg and are a strong presence in the daily life of residents. As Augsburg continues to be committed to the spiritual life of residents, a full-time chaplain offers Bible study classes and worship services both in the Chapel and on the floors of the Nursing Care Center. Every person is encouraged to explore his or her spirituality in a manner compatible with their beliefs.

Care is offered on every level. Nursing Care takes place in the West Building, Assisted Living in the Main Building on Campfield Road and Independent Living in the Village. Residents enjoy the ability to move between levels of care as circumstances change. A strong volunteer corps, a Therapeutic Recreation Department and a Physical Therapy staff nurture individuals on physical and emotional levels, strengthening both spirit and body. The most recent development in retirement living at Augsburg Lutheran Home and Village was the 2006 addition of Reformation Square which brought more than 70 new family members to 42 new large apartments and also a wonderful Town Center into the heart of the community.

Established in 1892, and relocated to its current 52 acre location in Baltimore County in 1929, Augsburg boasts the distinction of having served the elderly in the Baltimore area for the longest continuous period of time. Augsburg is also the smallest of the accredited Continuing Care Retirement Communities in the area. Its size encourages the family-like atmosphere that again distinguishes it from larger communities. Independent living apartments range in size from a 400 sq. ft. studio, to an extra large two-bedroom apartment with 1180 sq feet. Prices and fees reflect Augsburg’s commitment to remaining as reasonable as possible, while still offering the amenities found in much larger communities, giving Augsburg the distinction of being the most affordable community in the area. Having all levels of care on one campus is a distinction shared by many communities, but at Augsburg all levels of care are connected with corridors facilitating residents’ ability to move about making visiting friends, taking classes, going to either the formal Dining Room or the casual Cafe for meals or worshiping in our Chapel a simple act of walking down the hall.
