Our Mission
“…to provide for aged persons whose circumstances may so require, a comfortable residence with board, clothing, employment, medical attention, and such other comforts as Christian brotherhood may dictate.”
“This is the mission that was established by the founders of The National Lutheran Home for the Aged when it was incorporated in 1890. Since its inception, the Home has grown immensely, both in size and scope of care, to meet the ever-increasing needs for modern facilities and comprehensive care. Through these one-hundred years, the Home has never lost sight of those words ‘comfortable residence and Christian brotherhood’ in that original mandate.
The Board of Trustees, Executive Director, Staff and Volunteers at the National Lutheran Home all believe that while a comfortable residence with the best medical and nursing care available is important, it is not enough. Older adults need love, respect, security, involvement, opportunities for creative expression and new experiences. Most of all they need a sense of dignity. This is the very essence of Christian kinship. The Home strives to meet all of these needs of the residents, for it is only when their total needs are met that the real joy of living is experienced.”
In 2007 The National Lutheran Home serves 300 residents in the main facility; 150 additional people reside in the 129 Independent Living Units that surround the campus. In the near future, fifteen additional Independent Living Units will be added.
Plans for an additional campus in Virginia are progressing well. There is an ever increasing need for quality residences that address medical, social and spiritual concerns. Some of the facts that express the scope of the ministry of The National Lutheran Home are as follows:
• 300 bed skilled care capacity
• 129 Independent Living Units
• Over 200 on nursing staff
• Over 300 total staff
• Two Lutheran Chaplains
• Daily in-house physicians
• Local network of consulting physicians
• In-house physical therapy department
• 30 acre campus
• Financial support of over 50% of residents
